A good friend recently emailed me asking for a book to "fire him up" spiritually. I made a list and thought that a broader audience may want to see the list. Here are 12 that have made a significant difference in my life in recent years:
Books that will challenge your commitment:
- The Cross-Centered Life - by C.J. Mahaney
- Crazy Love - Francis Chan
- The Best Question Ever - Andy Stanley
- Pursuit of Holiness - Jerry Bridges
Books that will challenge your marriage:
- Sacred Marriage - Gary Thomas
- Choosing to Cheat - Andy Stanley (cheating your work instead of your family)
Practical Book that will Challenge/Encourage you:
- The Principle of the Path - Andy Stanley
Book on working with others/ difficult relationships / counseling
- Relationships: A Mess Worth Making - Tim Lane & Paul Tripp
Book about leadership challenges (when you have a difficult boss / ministry leader)
- A Tale of Three Kings - Gene Edwards
Great apologetic book
- The Reason for God - Tim Keller
Great books to think about the Church:
- The Radical Reformission - Mark Driscoll
- Simple Church - Eric Geiger & Thom Rainer
Completely life-changing but deep book
- Desiring God - John Piper
John Piper just posted this on Twitter and I thought it went well with this post:

"Mere Christianity" by CS Lewis is a good apologetic book.
"The Practice of the Presence of God" (aka "Practicing His Presence") is another good one. It's a series of letters by Brother Lawrence. I'm not sure which of your categories it would go under...
